I Wore Four \"24-Hour\" Foundations Through a 12-Hour Shift. Here's What Actually Stayed
Long-wear foundation claims are wild. I tested four through real shifts, a hot commute and too much coffee. One held up, one cracked, two slid off my nose.
Where to buy it

"24-hour wear." I've never once worn foundation for 24 hours, and if you have, please go to sleep. But I do work long days, and I wanted to know which long-wear foundations survive twelve hours of real life: a sweaty train, an office with blasting heat, and a face I touch way too often.
The rules
Same moisturizer. Same primer, which is to say none, because I wanted to test the foundation and not the primer. One layer with a damp sponge. No setting spray. Photos at hour one, six and twelve.
My skin is combination: oily T-zone, slightly dry cheeks. The worst of both worlds for foundation.
The winner: a matte long-wear classic
The one that held up was the old-school matte long-wear foundation every makeup artist has in their kit. It's not exciting. It doesn't look dewy. At hour twelve it had faded around the nose but there was no cracking and no patchiness. Around $40 to $50 at Sephora or Ulta, with a huge shade range.
The trick with this type: use less than you think. Thick layers of matte foundation look like a mask by lunch.
The surprise: a drugstore long-wear
A drugstore long-wear formula, around $14 at Target and Walmart, came in second. It oxidized a little, meaning it went slightly darker after an hour. Going half a shade lighter fixes that. Otherwise it wore almost as well as the expensive one.
The two that slid
A luxury serum foundation felt lovely and looked glowy at hour one. By hour five my nose was shiny and the foundation had broken up around the nostrils. That's not a scam, it's just a skin-care-ish formula on oily skin.
A "skin tint" that claimed long wear basically disappeared by lunch. If you have dry skin and want something light, fine. It's not long wear in any honest sense.
Things that matter more than the brand
- **Skin prep.** Heavy moisturizer under a matte foundation makes it slide. Let skincare sink in for five minutes.
- **Thin layers.** Two thin layers beat one thick one every time.
- **Powder only where you shine.** A little translucent powder down the center of your face does more than any "24-hour" claim.
- **Blotting papers.** Blot, don't add more powder at 3 p.m. More powder on oil turns cakey.
Where to buy
Sephora and Ulta both let you get color matched in store, and both give out samples. Use them. A sample worn for one full day tells you more than any review, including mine. Drugstore formulas at Target and Walmart don't usually offer testers, so check return policies. Several drugstore chains take back opened makeup with a receipt.
Verdict
For oily or combination skin, the classic matte long-wear formula is worth the money. If budget matters, the drugstore one gets you most of the way. Skip anything glowy if your T-zone shines by 11 a.m. Glow lasts until it doesn't.
